Fun(d)raiser A Great Success!!

The GoodWorks in Leiper’s Fork Summer Kick-Off Community Mixer and Fun(d)raiser was a huge success!  It was a packed house at Puckett’s Grocery in Leiper’s Fork.  Dorothy Bauer, raw food chef, prepared a spectacular spread of appetizers and main course entrees. Whole Foods in Cool Springs generously donated the food that Bauer turned into a fine piece of art.

Bob Teague entertained for the first hour with his beautiful classical, Spanish guitar music. Gary Talley followed with all the great classics joined by Michael Woody, Charlie “Chopper” Anderson, Dave Hoffner, Waldo Latowsky and the fabulous voice of Renee Armand.

It was a great night of people coming together with the community in mind and a goal to strengthen the need for whole-life living. Part of the proceeds goes to GoodWorks in Leiper’s Fork to help fund programs in sustainable living, organic farming, historic preservation, alternative building methods, health and wellness and personal development.

Thank you to everyone who came out and for all of your support!

“Bug Presentation” A Hit

Sunday, May 29th was the delightful presentation from Noah Charney and Charlie Eiseman, “Tracks and Sign Insects and Other Invertebrates.”

Pictured here is 8th grade science teacher Sarah White holding a jar of cocoons while talking with Eiseman.  Here is what she had to say:

“Charley Eiseman and Noah Charney fascinated us with their true tales of insect life and lore. Their personal investigations, which are chronicled in their book Tracks & Signs of Insects & Other Invertebrates turned up truths that are stranger then fiction. The leafcutter bee cuts perfect circles out of leaves, then uses them to make nest cells. The paper wasp builds its egg nest from prechewed wood and suspends it from a narrow stalk that has an ant repellant substance on it, to protect the eggs from marauding ants. No longer do we believe that the spider is at the top of the insect food chain. On the contrary, there are parasitic wasps that lay eggs in spider egg sacs which hatch and feed on the unhatched spider eggs. Insects live in a tough world, shared by Charley and Noah with artistic photography and wry humor. Much of this life and death drama happens right outside our front doors, if we but open our eyes and look a little bit closer than we normally do.”

Solutions For A Flood Damaged Home

Members gathered in Leiper’s Fork at the home of Rachael McCampbell whose home was affected by the May 2010 flood.  Green Architect, Rob Andrys, lead a discussion on options, ways and methods to restore the home using green technologies and materials.

McCampbell says, “I was thrilled when Good Works in Leiper’s Fork came to my hundred year old house to help educate me, and others, on how to make our homes more energy efficient and how to make flood damage repairs that are green. Rob Andrys, a green architect, helped us to realize there are so many small, inexpensive things we can do that would save us vast amounts of money on our electric and water bills which would help our planet too. We discussed the pros and cons of replacing old windows vs. installing new ones, painting with Non-VOC paints to prevent off-gassing, choices of insulation etc… It was very informative and I’m so glad they helped advise me on what to do to my house.”
